Is there an energy shortage on earth?  Yes, and no. Most would agree that it would be beneficial for us to follow a path of energy conservation, and to pursue means of generating electricity that is less draining on our limited natural resources.  Preferably sources of energy that are clean and truly renewable.

All debates aside, it seems more widely accepted that a good, clean source of energy is that harnessed from the rays of the sun:  Solar energy via photovoltaic systems.  This is increasingly the case as silicon elements have been developed to build them, thus making them less taxing on precious commodities than was previously the case.  Yes, they do take resources to build (e.g. aluminum), but once created, they can generate power for decades.
